“Transformation” is most certainly not an event.
“Transformation” is bigger than any single event. I really is a process. And, in the field of leadership, transformation is often focused on purposely creating a new and different culture. Let’s take a closer look . . .

Consider this . . .
A great way to think about transformation more broadly, is to think of times when a character in a book or movie experienced something that profoundly shifted who the character was. The character didn’t make a minor adjustment, but rather one we would call “transformational” by becoming someone fundamentally new or different, or more loving, insightful, balanced, or fun. An older movie model of transformation might be My Fair Lady, while a newer one could be The Intouchables — both entertaining and both sharing journeys of personal transformation. In both cases, these examples are provided to help clarify and make the point that true transformation is never an event but rather an evolution often created by challenging change situations.
Fundamental change — what we call transformation — is what makes dramatic growth in areas such as sales, relationships, or quality (to name just a few areas) possible. Simple change doesn’t necessarily do that — but transformation does. Essentially, the role of transformation is “capacity making” — enabling people, teams, businesses, and organizations to better cope with problems, business opportunities, and a host of other forces that “conspire” to force change. This more mature ability — one that allows people to lead transformation — in turn, creates more success — personally and professionally.
Transformation and Leadership
The ability to affect transformation is an essential leadership role but one that is very complex and difficult. It’s not easy to envision and model new ways of “being” and not easy to help people navigate situations involving transformation in ways that require them to grow their capacity. Here’s a two-step process we think will help you overcome impediments to making fundamental change and leading it successfully.
- Step 1
Whenever you don’t know how to achieve something, influence someone or something, or envision something new or better, make a list of all your assumptions related to the subject at hand. - Step 2
Read the list and as soon as you see that one or more of the shared or individuals assumptions behind current action may not be valid anymore, you are on to something! Keep at that. Identifying, challenging, and changing invalid assumptions is essentially the foundation of transformation — in leadership and in life.
