In the spirit of never missing an opportunity for improvement, QwikCoach believes that two fundamental beliefs are needed when it comes to self-development.
Belief #1
Not only is change and improvement possible, it is essential to workplace success
Belief #2
Virtually everyone can make improvements — from the highly skilled to the “just at the starting line” players.
In fact, the higher up the achievement ladder you go, the greater the need for more analysis and work on improvement of one’s strengths and acceptance and focus on one’s developmental needs.
One of the major reasons leaders, managers, and others do not focus consistently on self and staff improvement is the pace and complexity of modern business. With constant pressures to perform and time always being of the essence, many managers and leaders — even those with high levels of self awareness — actually choose not to pay attention to opportunities for self and staff improvement. It’s likely these leaders are focused on short-term goals, but they may be missing what we commonly call “the big picture.”
Seeing the Big Picture and Developing Self — There is a Connection!
The importance of seeing the big picture and developing yourself and others is evident in the classic story of the stonecutters. As you read it, reflect on perhaps why you are missing the many opportunities you have for giving and receiving feedback and building skills in yourself and others — opportunities that can create results that not only focus on you but will contribute to improving the entire organization. Enjoy the article and consider spending more time than you currently do on observing behaviors and helping yourself and others use this information to plan and make improvements.
If you think about self and staff development, you can rest assured that either giving or receiving feedback is going to be key. Here’s a new book — Thanks for the Feedback — that should help you strengthen this critical competency
